Record giant Warner Music Group (WMG) has partnered up with The Sandbox, a blockchain-based interactive game, to create a music-themed world in the metaverse.
The Sandbox is eponymously a game of the sandbox genre.
The collaboration will create the first music world in the Sandbox Gaming Metaverse. It will have live concerts and musical virtual reality experiences, which will feature Warner’s artists and their catalog. It is the first time WMG or Warner has associated with an NFT-based project.
Metaverse and Music
The Sandbox devs mentioned that WMG would be a part of the game’s ESTATE, which is described as land in-game and will consist of musical events and a concert venue. It will also act as a portal for WMG’s artists for virtual appearances.
“We’re shaping The Sandbox as a fun entertainment destination where creators, fans, and players can enjoy first-of-a-kind immersive experiences and be more closely connected to their favourite musical artists through NFTs,”
Sébastien Borget, Co-Founder and COO, The Sandbox
The idea is loosely inspired and similar to Fortnite’s virtual concerts to compare. Artists like Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, and Marshmello have performed virtually.
WMG Deal
The Sandbox is no stranger to collaborations and partnerships. Still, WMG is one of the biggest record corporations and owns major record labels and top talent like Atlantic, Warner Records, etc. The partnership is essentially a gateway for WMG talent to appear on The Sandbox’s new musical venture.
Oana Ruxandra, WMG’s Chief Digital Officer, said that the firm would “develop persistent, immersive social music experiences that defy real-world limitations and allow our artists and their fans to engage like never before, as they indulge themselves in this new online sphere of the metaverse.”
For the event, The Sandbox will hold a land sale in March, opening the gates to purchase in-game property adjacent to WMG’s Estate.
The Sandbox
Initially developed by the studio Pixowl, The Sandbox was acquired by Hong Kong-based gaming software company Animoca Brands in 2018, and it developed into a blockchain game. The game has previously associated itself with big industry names like deadmau5, Snoop Dogg, The Smurfs (comic), to name a few.
The alpha version of The Sandbox’s metaverse was launched in November 2021 and is still in development. Now that Warner has signed up, The Sandbox will feature exciting lineups in its musical endeavor and will include more content in the future.
