- Elon Musk announced he will move SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) headquarters from California to Texas.
- The move is in response to California’s new law prohibiting schools from notifying parents about students’ gender identity changes.
- Musk cited California’s “hostile regulatory climate” as another reason for the relocation.
- The headquarters moves will affect thousands of employees at both companies.
- Musk has previously moved Tesla’s headquarters from California to Texas in 2021.
Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter), announced on Tuesday that he will move the headquarters of both companies from California to Texas.
This decision comes in response to California Governor Gavin Newsom signing a new law that bans schools from notifying parents if their child identifies as transgender.
Musk stated on X,
“This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
He later added that X’s headquarters would move from San Francisco to Austin.

The billionaire entrepreneur, who has an estimated net worth of $221 billion, cited California’s “hostile regulatory climate” as another reason for the relocation.
Musk claimed he had warned Governor Newsom about a year ago that such laws would force families and companies to leave California.
This move will affect thousands of employees across both companies, as Musk requires most workers to be present in the office.
After acquiring X in 2022, Musk ordered almost all employees to return to the office, demanding that they be “extremely hardcore.”
The relocation of these tech giants’ headquarters follows a trend set by Musk himself. In 2021, he moved Tesla’s corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas.
However, Tesla maintained its Palo Alto office as an “engineering headquarters” and even expanded at that location.
Musk’s decision has sparked controversy and debate. Critics point out that Musk has made inflammatory statements about transgender people in the past.
In 2023, he stated on X that he would “actively lobby to criminalize” gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
The move also comes at a time when Musk has shown support for former President Donald Trump, who is expected to roll back transgender rights if re-elected. Musk reportedly plans to contribute $45 million per month to a pro-Trump super PAC called America PAC.
California’s regulatory environment has been a point of contention for Musk and other tech leaders. In 2023, Governor Newsom signed the “Digital Financial Assets Law,” which imposes strict reporting requirements on crypto-related activities.
This law, set to take effect in 2025, requires entities and individuals to obtain a Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) license to conduct certain crypto activities.
Despite the controversy, Musk’s companies continue to have a significant presence in California. Earlier this month, X began seeking sublessees for its 800,000 sq ft office in downtown San Francisco.
It’s unclear how the headquarters move will affect these existing properties and operations.
The relocation of SpaceX and X headquarters represents a significant shift in the tech landscape. Texas has been attracting more tech companies in recent years due to its lower taxes and less stringent regulations.
This move by Musk could potentially encourage other companies to follow suit.
